Nyx Mask

Description

Making this mask for my costume was a lot of fun. Firstly I purchased a mask base in the shape of a 'cat's mask' to start from. I then cut the mask to fit the shape I had in mind and painted it - first with black, then with 2 layers of glitter paint.

Following this, I affixed the beak (which is actually part of a Christmas decoration from Michaels). Once the beak was affixed, I actually attached the brown feathers. If I made this again, that would probably be one of the last pieces I did - but I wasn't at all sure what it was going to look like.

For the eyes I took 2 sequin craft sticks and bent them to the eye shape I was going for. Using the sticks instead of pure sequins was a lot less time consuming and also gives more depth to the mask (since the sequins would have laid relatively flat).

For my ear tufts I bought some pheasant feathers and then acid dyed them using koolaid (blue raspberry lemonade). The blue wasn't quite as eye-popping as I'd hoped, but the feathers were tan not white so it couldn't be helped.

The black feathers are actually 2 feathers cut down into wedge shapes.

This mask was for my representation of the Goddess Nyx, who is the Grecian Goddess of the Night. She is the daughter of Chaos, and the mother of many heroes and minor gods. I had fun with this costume, but I think the most hilarious part was that all the comments about my costume were along the lines of 'awesome!' - but no one knew nor asked who I was supposed to be.
